An AI book for kids that teaches how it works, not just what it is
Most books for kids about AI stop at the robot on the cover. This one is built so a kid of 8 to 12 can answer the real questions: where AI already is in their life, how it learns from examples, what it is bad at, and what only a person can do. Then they train a first AI themselves and make something with it.
It is written for a kid to read on their own, with Parent Corner notes for the grown-up reading beside them. The AI companion characters, Pixel, Echo, and Algo, show up where creativity, communication, and logic each come into play.
What a kid learns, chapter by chapter
- AI Is Already In Your Life. Finding the AI a kid already uses every day, and noticing what it does and does not know about them.
- How AI Actually Works. Learning from examples, patterns, and guesses, explained in plain words with things a kid can try at the table.
- What Only You Can Do. Judgment, taste, curiosity, and knowing what is true: the parts no AI supplies.
- You Direct, AI Executes. How to give an AI a clear job, check what comes back, and make it better. The habit the whole series is built on.
- Closing: You Are an AI Explorer. Where to go next.
Hands-On Missions in every chapter
Every chapter ends in a real activity a kid completes with a parent, with a printable worksheet and clear steps. The missions are the point: a kid who has trained a small AI and watched it get things wrong understands more than one who has only read about it.
How it is built
Steven Makarion works every day with an AI partner he built, Aria Makarion, and wrote this book so his daughter, and yours, could learn the same way: work with AI as a partner, direct it, check it, and stay the one in charge. The series started when she was eleven and asked him to explain what AI really was. She is thirteen now.
Questions parents ask
What age is AI for Kids written for?
Ages 8 to 12. A confident reader of eight can read it alone; a ten-year-old gets the most from it; a twelve-year-old moves quickly into the second book.
Is this a coding book?
No. It is about how artificial intelligence works and how to direct it well. The missions use ordinary tools with a parent beside them, and no programming is required. The third book in the series is where projects and code come in.
Which book should we start with?
This one. AI for Kids is the first book in the AI Generation series. AI Safety for Kids and Teens follows for ages 10 to 14, and Raising the AI Generation is the companion for parents.
Does my kid need their own AI account?
The missions are designed to be done with a parent, using the parent's tools and judgment. The book is clear that an adult stays in the loop, and the Parent Corner notes say how.
Who wrote it?
Steven Makarion, founder of Makarios Media and its family imprint Pax Ember, who builds and works with an AI partner every day. The book is published under his own name as of October 2026.
